Jon Gordon and the Wil Swindler Quartet

April 21, 2024 at Nocturne, the Wil Swindler Quartet presents alto saxophonist Jon Gordon.  Denver heavyweights Ben Markley (piano), Dru Heller (drums), Seth Lewis (bass) and Wil Swindler (alto saxophone) will be joined by NYC saxophonist Jon Gordon.  These "double alto" sets will feature fresh takes on standards as well as original music by Swindler and Gordon presented in a swing-focused modern style.

Wil Swindler is a saxophonist, composer, and winner of the 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship, and educator based in the Denver Front Range area. Mr. Swindler holds a B.M. from the University of North Texas and has received commissions from West Point's Jazz Knights, The USAF Falconaires, Denver University, Colorado State University. As a performer, he has played with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Cuong Vu, John Fedchock, Steve Wilson, Bill Warfield, Greg Gisbert, and many others. Wil Swindler is on the music faculty at Colorado State University as Associate Director of Jazz Studies.

Jon Gordon, winner of the 1996 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, is a native of Staten Island, NY and a prominent student of the great Phil Woods. He has worked with Maria Schneider, Ron McClure, Clark Terry, Benny Carter, Phil Woods, T.S. Monk, Bill Mays, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Bill Charlap, Ray Barreto, Chico Hamilton, Jimmy Cobb, Ben Riley, Harry Connick jr., Bob Mintzer and the N.Y. Pops Orchestra, among many others. Some recent NYC appearances include stints at the Blue Note, Birdland, Iridum, Smalls, the Jazz Standard, Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y, the JVC Jazz Festival, the Village Vanguard, Fat Cat, and The Charlie Parker Festival.

The 'Ellington Experience' is the ultimate night out at Nocturne, featuring a five course tasting menu with wine pairings, served at just two tables per set in our favorite nook of the main level under the curve of the grand art deco staircase.

Important Notes:

- On Wednesdays and Thursdays we set aside four to six walk-in bar seats per set. Walk-in guests will have a music charge of $22 per person applied to their check.

This night features original music by composer/saxophonist Wil Swindler alongside modern interpretations/arrangements of standard Jazz material.  This quartet is made up of a special group of musicians that have played together on countless projects over the years. The music is composed and performed with a pervasive sense of aesthetic beauty and attention to detail, and is driven by respect for the tradition of Jazz music and its relevance to modern audiences.  Connection across the musicians in the band extending to the listeners is the stated goal of these shows.
