Derek Banach Quintet

Set 1: 6:30pm-7:45pm
Set 2: 9:00pm-10:15pm
2020 has been a challenging year for the world, especially so for the musical communities within America - but in times of tremendous adversity, great art arises from struggle much like a phoenix from the ashes. Bringing music to the Nocturne stage to help us look ahead, the Derek Banach Quintet will perform original, straight ahead compositions by all of its members. The lineup features a number of Denver's finest as they get back on the bandstand after too long a break due to the 2020 pandemic crisis.
Colorado native Derek Banach has performed professionally for 25 years in a variety of settings from Jazz to Hip-Hop, Salsa, Classical, and Reggae. His roots are firmly set in the Hard-Bop stylings of 60's period icons such as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Derek's quintet album, "Tugende" displays his composing talents and personal approach to trumpet playing. He has recorded with Italian producer Nicola Conte, Quintetto X, Paul Mulliken and has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Richie Cole, Keith Oxman, Joe Bonner and Ron Miles to name but a few.
Musical guests include: Peter Sommer, David Bernot, Todd Reid, Ken Walker and Jeff Jenkins

Colorado pianist/educator/composer Jeff Jenkins returns to the Nocturne stage to explore and feature the works of composer BIlly Strayhorn. At times Strayhorn worked his craft in the shadow of his friend and collaborator Duke Ellington, but with further study of his compositions, many jazz musicians today regard him as an equal to Duke. Jeff will be joined on stage by Michael D’Angelo (drums), Seth Lewis (bass), Eric Erhardt (sax) and Greg Gisbert (trumpet).

Jeff Jenkins began his musical life in pastoral Nebraska City, Nebr. and came to the piano through the guidance of his musical family, and quickly found that "playing by ear" proved to be perfect escape from an all too predictable small town reality. As a jazz pianist, Jeff has worked with a number of jazz legends including: Phil Woods, Freddie Hubbard, David Fathead Newman, Marlena Shaw, Eddie Harris, Richie Cole, Dakota Staton, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, John Abercrombie, and Clark Terry. He is a talented band leader in his own right leading both straight ahead ensembles and "The Organization" a powerhouse B3 trio that plays often at Nocturne and other venues in Denver.
