With the aim of disseminating their original music, this jazz trio was formed in its first iteration in Colombia (South America) in mid-2011. The trio is pleased to perform original works alongsude modern arrangements of a well curated list of standards. The band is characterized by a powerful and aggressive sound that contrasts with its great lyricism at slow tempos. The Colombian pianist Adrián Herrera surprises with his great aesthetic and interpretative qualities and wonder filled songwriting. On this special occasion, Herrera is joined by Columbian/American bassist Gonzalo and drummer Andy Wheelock in what will this this trio's debut in Colorado.
Over the course of his 30 year career, Adrian Herrera-Escobar has played with numerous Colombian and international artists such as Ronald Carter, Antonio Hart, Mark Gross, David Bennet, Joel Spencer, Chip Mc Neill, Larry Gray, Tito Carrillo, Jim Pisano, Bobbie Shew, Dave Pietro, among others. He has played at many jazz festivals in Colombia and the United States, including concerts at the Teatro Jorge Eliecer Gaitán in the framework of the Jazz al Parque 2007, 2009 and 2013 festival, Sevilla 2008, Julio Mario Santo Domingo Theater 2011, Fernando Sor School 2011, 2012 and 2013, and Adrian Herrera Quintet live in Chicago (2016). He was recently chosen as the winner of the international festival of jazz Voces de Cartagena in its 2019 version in the category of the best group (Adrian Herrera Jazz Quintet) and best Arrangement (El Mejoral).

The Mestas/Abbott Quartet plays beautiful and life-affirming songs from some of the most prolific composers of Latin American jazz: Moreira, Manzanero, Oscar Castro-Neves, Toninho Horta, and others from South America, Cuba, and Mexico. The quartet features Victor Mestas on piano, Mike Abbott on acoustic and electric guitars, Jill Fredrickson on drums and percussion, and Mike Facey on bass.
Mike Abbott has performed and recorded with a number of musical legends including: Randy Brecker, Maria Schneider, Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Chie Imaizumi, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Bacharach, Paul Shaffer and others. After earning his Music Degree in 1988 at the University of Miami in Florida, he moved to New York City and started playing clubs, touring the US and Europe, and recording. In 2003, Abbott and his family moved from New Jersey to Denver. He teaches at the University of Denver, Colorado Conservatory for The Jazz Arts, and privately in Denver.
Victor Mestas is from Caracas, Venezuela. Mestas has performed with renowned bands, including Guaco and Trabuco Venezolano, and he has also accompanied renowned singers, including: Soledad Bravo, Cheo Feliciano, and Julio Iglesias. Since moving to Boulder with his wife and two daughters in 2012 he’s been performing on the Brazilian-Latin Jazz-Salsa scene as a first call player. In 2016 he started to teach Latin Jazz Ensemble/Latin Piano at Thompson Jazz Studies Program, CU Boulder. Mestas is a YAMAHA endorsed artist in Venezuela.

Moderno is a latin jazz quintet that brings together some of Colorado’s finest players for a brilliant exhibition of Afro-Caribbean traditions, including the music of Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and others. Featuring pulsating rhythms from traditional latin dances to jazz-influenced beats to funk grooves; the horns lay down a variety of colors -- red-hot to cool and bluesy, and the group’s outstanding soloists stretch their imaginations to give listeners a new and unique experience in each show. Whether just listening or feeling the urge to get up and dance, audiences absolutely love this fantastic band.

Saxophonist Jeremy Wendelin is a talented and versatile musician who has performed in a range of musical situations from street corner to club to concert hall — from solo saxophone to symphony orchestra. He is the lead alto player for the Ultraphonic Jazz Orchestra and saxophonist for the Spotlight Band, and maintains a busy schedule as a freelance player around Colorado. As a teacher, he works with woodwind sections at several Denver-area schools and maintains a small studio of private students. Jeremy regularly leads his jazz quartet at clubs, concerts, and events. Whether playing classic jazz or new compositions, the quartet is always entertaining and exciting. In addition, Jeremy leads the Latin Jazz quintet Moderno, which explores Afro-Caribbean jazz from traditional to contemporary. As a jazz player, teacher, classical soloist — on every stage, Jeremy crafts a great musical experience and invites his audience to enjoy.
We are excited to welcome the contemporary Afro-Caribbean and Latin Jazz sounds of Modernoback to the Nocturne stage for this special show. Moderno’s repertoire is anchored by a compelling book of original material, but also includes select Latin Jazz classics and works from contemporary masters, such as Miguel Zenon, Paquito D’Rivera and John Benitez. Moderno is a two time Nocturne artist in residency "alumni" and has become a crowd favorite over the last four years.

Venezuelan bassist Gonzalo Teppa presents a night of compelling small group repertoire drawing from the musical wells of contemporary jazz, Latin American music (Venezuelan, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban) blues, free jazz and more.
Teppa obtained his Bachelor of Music and Master in Jazz Studies degrees at The University of Colorado and has performed with: Wynton Marsalis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Matt Wilson, Ed Simon, Chris Potter, Tom Harrell, Bobby Shew, Ron Miles, Art Lande, Slide Hampton, Jeremy Pelt, Ben Goldberg, among others. Some of Gonzalo's awards are: “Pathways to Jazz Grant-2018”, “2004, 2005, 2006, Best Jazz Soloist Award” from Downbeat Magazine, two Latin Grammy nominations, and more. Teppa has released five albums: “Designios”, “Travesias”, “Serpentina", “CONtrabajos de Aldemaro” and “Sinergia”.

The Walter Gorra Quintet makes its debut at Nocturne, playing Walter’s newest original compositions and arrangements, the quintet features Gonzalo Teppa on bass and Alejandro Castaño on drums along with world class horn players John Gunther on woodwinds and Gabe Mervine on trumpet round out the group. These long-time friends and Colorado musical accomplices draw from their backgrounds in various styles of music to develop an exciting sound. From a modern Afro-Cuban Danzon composition to a well-loved jazz standard played their way, the group features a diverse and fresh library of music. The quintet will delight audiences while respecting the tradition and history of jazz and making its own contributions to the trajectory of the music.

Studying at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Walter earned degrees in jazz piano performance and structural engineering and had the good fortune to study and work with Art Lande, Jeff Jenkins, Victor Mestas and many other notable Colorado musicians. Earning his master’s degree at William Paterson University in New Jersey, Walter had the opportunity to study and work with Jim McNeely, Cecil Bridgewater, Harold Mabern and Bill Charlap among others. During his time in New York, Walter also performed and/or wrote and arranged music for Paquito D’Rivera, Ingrid Jensen, and Pete McGuinness and others. Walter has performed at jazz festivals and clubs throughout North and Central America and won Downbeat and ASCAP Herb Alpert awards for his compositions.

Walter Gorra's Elevation Trio (Alejandro Castaño - drums, Gonzalo Teppa - bass) return to the Nocturne stage Sunday nights in May, for their second artist in residency run. This series will feature Walter's unique arrangements of classic Latin American songs like 'Alfonsina y el Mar,' 'Irremediablemente Solo,' and more. Walter, Gonzalo and Alejandro are long-time friends and Colorado musical accomplices that draw from their diverse musical backgrounds to develop an exciting approach to these songs, which posses great depth and beauty, and are unfortunately not widely heard in a modern context.
