Chick is one of the most prolific and acclaimed of jazz artists from the second half of the 20th century, with contributions to most forms of modern music, including straight-ahead jazz, electric fusion, avant-garde and orchestral music. 

A DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, 22-time Grammy winner, and keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living legend status after five decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering. 

From May through June we invite you to join us, as we bring three fine Colorado pianists (and their bands) to our stage to celebrate Chick's incredible musical legacy.

THE GABRIEL MERVINE QUARTET

Gabriel is deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical but is also a very active contributor to the modern music scene nationally.  Born in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Gabriel began his professional playing career at the age of thirteen. By the time he graduated high school he was already looking at making a career out of playing the trumpet. He has studied with Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, and Greg Gisbert and quickly gained recognition for as a unique and capable player in any environment. Gabriel has performed with Natalie Cole, Christian McBride, Chie Imaizumi, Terence Blanchard, Russell Malone, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, John McNeil, Convergence, Roberta Gambarini, the Motet, and Houston Person  Gabriel now resides in Denver, Colorado and keeps a rigorous schedule of local and national performances.

In his first Artist in Residency at Nocturne, Gabriel plays in a quartet format in support of his first full length Album entitled 'People' (recently released on the Synergy Label)

Pat Casey plays Jaco

Originally from Denver, Pat Casey arrived in New Orleans in February 2008, and quickly assimilated himself into the local music scene. He has become a respected and prominent bassist in New Orleans and plays regularly with luminaries like Chris Thomas King and Bill Summers (where he currently holds the bass seat in the famed Headhunters).

Pat has also pursued his own progressive project, called Pat Casey and the New Sound. The group hosts an introspective yet energetic Sunday night weekly at the Spotted Cat, which has become something of an institution for lovers of jazz and jazz fusion. He’s traveled the world with various groups and has picked up fresh and worldly influences throughout his career, including funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, jazz and gospel. His sound is insightful and captivating, and his creative energy is palpable. 

At Nocturne, Pat with fretless bass in hand is honoring the great Jaco Pastorius in a 3 week run.

DR. WALTER BARR- TRUMPET, FLUGELHORN, ARRANGER Bringing many years of performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino, Walter’s performances credentials include work with Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Dizzy Gillespie, Gladys Knight, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr., Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Henry Mancini, Marvin Gaye, Lou Rawls, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Mathis plus many others. Walter is a Bach Trumpet/Artist clinician and is a Professor Emeritus at The Metropolitan State University of Denver.

FRANCISCO MEJIAS – CONGAS, BATA, CORO Fransisco Mejias, hailing originally from Santurce, Puerto Rico, enjoys the reputation of being one of the Nation’s top congeros and latin orquesta leaders. His performance credentials include work with the renowned Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Clare Fischer, salsa artist Tito Nieves, Gato Barbieri, Eddie Santiago, the late great Pete El Conde Rodriquez. plus many others. Francisco is the leader of Conjunto Colores, Colorado’s most popular Salsa Band.

VICTOR MESTAS, KEYBOARD, ARRANGER Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Victor Mestas, 2010 Latin Grammy Winner has more than 80 recordings to his professional credits. Victor has accompanied an array of world renowned singers including Julio Iglesias Uruguay/Argentina tour in 2010, Soledad Bravo, Cheo Feliciano, LuisEnrique, and many others. Mestas has performed (as pianist/keyboardist/arranger/producer) for renowned bands in Venezuela, including Guaco, Caracas son 7, and El trabuco venezolano (Venezuelan Salsa All- Stars).

GONZALO TEPPA-DOUBLE BASS Hailing from Lara, Venezuela, Gonzalo Teppas brings amazing performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino. His performance credentials include work with Slide Hampton, Dave and Don Grusin, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Conrad Herwig, and John Von Ohlen, Ron Miles and many others. In addition to his jazz performance background, Mr. Teppas also has extensive international orchestral performance experience. Currently he serves as an adjunct teaching professor at both the University of Wyoming and Metropolitan State University of Denver.

CHRISTINE BARBOSA – VOCALIST, PIANIST, COMPOSER Cristine Barbosa’s unique vocal stylings in English, Spanish and Portuguese have made her one of the most sought-after performers in the Southwest. She has shared the stage with Eddie Palmieri, Gato Barbieri, Luciana Souza, and has been a featured artist at Aspen Jazz, the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, the Santa Fe Jazz Festival, Taste of Colorado, and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Early in her career, Cristine assembled a top-notch Latin-Jazz/Salsa group, touring Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

HOWARD HERNANDEZ – TIMBALERO, LATIN PERCUSSIONIST A 1996 graduate of the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, timbalero Howard Hernandez has toured throughout Latin America with some of the world’s finest salsa groups. Of special note is his work with the highly popular Los Conquistadores de la Salsa and La Orquesta Camaguey. Howard relocated to the U.S. in 2001 and has been the mainstay timbalero for the popular salsa group, Conjunto Colores.

The Wil Swindler Quartet plays a special night at Nocturne featuring Charlie Parker's Savoy year's.

His band includes: Jeff Jenkins on piano, Erik Applegate on bass, and Todd Reid on drums.

Wil Swindler, is a saxophonist, composerm winner of the 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship, and educator based in the Denver Front Range area.   

Mr. Swindler holds a B.M. from the University of North Texas and has received commissions from West Point's Jazz Knights, The USAF Falconaires, Denver University, Colorado State University, and has composed original music for Steve Wilson and Steve Weist among others. As a performer, he has played with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Cuong Vu, John Fedchock, Steve Wilson, Bill Warfield, Greg Gisbert, and many others. 

In the Fall of 2009, Mr. Swindler joined the music faculty at Colorado State University as Associate Director of Jazz Studies where he teaches jazz theory, jazz composition/arranging, improvisation and directs Jazz Ensemble II. Wil has served as an Adjunct Saxophone Teacher at Denver University, composition teacher for the Colorado Conservatory of the Jazz Arts, faculty at the Yellowstone Jazz Camp as well as the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Camp, and maintains an active private studio of saxophone and composition students.

JEFF NATHANSON hosts a nine week exploration of works of the great Brazilian composer, arranger, and musician Antônio Carlos Jobim. Jeff is a Colorado and Los Angeles based saxophonist, composer, and recording artist. Some of the artists with whom Jeff has performed or recorded include: Earl “Fatha” Hines, Freddie Fender, Russell Ferrante, Vinnie Colaiuta, Alex Bugnon, Eric Marienthal, Alejandro Sanz, Frankie Valli, Chuck Findley, Ehsan Aman (Kite Runner), Joel Dorham, Sheila E. and Pete Escovedo, Ray Obiedo, Hazel Miller, Rob Mullins, and John Novello.

Since 1991, Jeff has been a featured soloist and horn section member for Latin-pop superstar Luis Miguel. He has toured and recorded extensively with Mr. Miguel, appearing on numerous albums and videos, and has performed thousands of concerts worldwide at venues including Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Staples Center, Aztec Stadium Mexico City, and Estadio Belez in Argentina.  Jeff has also appeared on prime-time shows such as The Today Show, Ellen Degeneres and recorded tracks for the Latin Grammy awards.

Although a Colorado native, Mr. Nathanson spends a lot of time in California where he graduated from U.C. Berkeley and lived for fifteen years. While Jeff is involved with many artists from a wide variety of backgrounds, he has also recorded two of his own CD’s: More than Coincidence and Deep into the Night which showcase both his playing and compositional talents. In addition to all of his musical endeavors, Jeff is a representative for D’Adarrio/RICO reeds.

In his Nocturne Artist in Residency Jeff is focusing on the man created modern Bossa Nova - Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Guitarist/composer Steve Kovalcheck holds a B.M. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a M.M. from the University of Northern Colorado, where he currently teaches Jazz Improvisation, Jazz History, directs jazz ensembles and leads the Jazz Guitar Ensemble. His professional experience includes recording and touring with Columbia recording artist Robinella and the C.C. String Band. Kovalcheck has performed with artists including Victor Krauss, the “New York Voices,” the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, Jeff Coffin, Tommy Sims, Blue Note Recording Artist Carrie Rodriguez, and the Dana Landry Quartet. His compositions have been played internationally, including performances at the “Jazz En Tete” festival in Clermont, France.

Peter Sommer has contributed his energetic tenor playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to avant garde and beyond at venues across the nation and around the world. Although rooted in the great jazz tradition of his heroes Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, he continues to search for the mystery in music making and takes great joy in sharing the present moment with the listener.

Peter has released four albums as a bandleader, is a regular member of the Ken Walker Sextet, Ninth and Lincoln (modern big band under the direction of Tyler Gilmore), the Wil Swindler Elevenet, the Fred Hess Big Band, the Colorado Jazz Orchestra, the New Third Stream Saxophone Quartet and is an honorary member of the Russian Dragon Band. He also performs often as a soloist, in duo with Art Lande, and as a leader of his own quartet and septet. Peter has performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, and has been a featured jazz soloist at North American Saxophone Alliance Regional and Biennial Conferences. He has also performed at IAJE International Conferences in Anaheim and Toronto, Canada, and has performed at World Saxophone Congresses in Valencia, Spain, Bangkok, Thailand, St. Andrews, Scotland and Strasbourg, France.

Peter Sommer is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. At CSU, Mr. Sommer directs Jazz Ensemble I and coordinates the Jazz Studies area. Peter is a D'Addario endorsed Woodwinds Artist.

Paul Musso, is a veteran music educator and freelance guitarist who has performed throughout Colorado area with many diverse ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, the Boulder Festival Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Westcliff Jazz Festival. He is also a prolific author of jazz guitar books with Mel Bay: Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar/Teaching Your Guitar to Walk, Graded Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Solos and his most recent release, Developing Jazz Guitar Solos and co-author of Mel Bay’s 2000 Jazz Guitar, where Paul shares the bill with greats Johnny Smith, John Abercrombie, Buckey Pizzarelli, George Van Eps, Andy Summers and many others.

Paul is the director of the Guitar Program at the University of Colorado Denver has been with CU Denver over fifteen years teaching fretboard theory, commercial guitar styles, applied guitar studies, jazz theory, songwriting, improvisation and mentoring a host of guitar ensembles.
