Singer Robert Johnson and the Mark Diamond Trio

Fridays in March and April we are proud to feature the Mark Diamond Trio, (drummer Dru Heller, pianist Scott Martin) and Robert Johnson, a veteran singer and entertainer.

Robert has shared the stage with many including Stevie Wonder, Angela Brown and Stan Getz and has appeared in national and regional productions of Porgy and Bess, Ain’t Misbehavin, Blues In The Night, A Brief History Of White Music, Showboat, The Full Monty, The Buddy Holly Story and as the voice of the plant in Little Shop Of Horrors. Robert has sung The National Anthem at fourth game of the 1976 World Series in New York and the 1984 NBA All-Star game in Denver.

Since making his home in Denver, Colorado Robert has been named Best Male Vocalist in the Denver Posts Readers Poll, Best Jazz Vocalist by the Colorado Black Artists Association, was honored as Colorado’s Best Male Singer by the News and Radio Media and Best Male Vocalist by the Colorado Songwriters Association. As a performer with the 17th Avenue All-Stars, an a cappella group that in 1993, won the National Harmony Sweepstakes.

Robert not only lent his vocal talents to their CD “ True Colors”, he also produced and recorded the project. And more recently his work on “ Seize The Day “ by Michael Friedman garnered a Regional Grammy nod for Best Pop Instrumental Recording. Currently Robert can be heard on his CD releases through his label Jakarta Records Ltd. Those recordings are Richard The Third, Black Prince Road and Home For The Holiday’s.

His latest recording the soon to be released jazz and blues project A Long Road Traveled that his talents not only as a vocalist, but also as a songwriter, instrumentalist and producer.

Paul Musso, is a veteran music educator and freelance guitarist who has performed throughout Colorado area with many diverse ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, the Boulder Festival Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Westcliff Jazz Festival. He is also a prolific author of jazz guitar books with Mel Bay: Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar/Teaching Your Guitar to Walk, Graded Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Solos and his most recent release, Developing Jazz Guitar Solos and co-author of Mel Bay’s 2000 Jazz Guitar, where Paul shares the bill with greats Johnny Smith, John Abercrombie, Buckey Pizzarelli, George Van Eps, Andy Summers and many others.

Paul is the director of the Guitar Program at the University of Colorado Denver has been with CU Denver over fifteen years teaching fretboard theory, commercial guitar styles, applied guitar studies, jazz theory, songwriting, improvisation and mentoring a host of guitar ensembles.

Three Colorado tenor artists (Sam Williams, Keith Oxman, and Peter Sommer) honor the 'Hawk' for his contributions to the art and spirit of the jazz art form.

Chick is one of the most prolific and acclaimed of jazz artists from the second half of the 20th century, with contributions to most forms of modern music, including straight-ahead jazz, electric fusion, avant-garde and orchestral music. 

A DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, 22-time Grammy winner, and keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living legend status after five decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering.

DR. WALTER BARR- TRUMPET, FLUGELHORN, ARRANGER Bringing many years of performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino, Walter’s performances credentials include work with Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Dizzy Gillespie, Gladys Knight, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr., Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Henry Mancini, Marvin Gaye, Lou Rawls, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Mathis plus many others. Walter is a Bach Trumpet/Artist clinician and is a Professor Emeritus at The Metropolitan State University of Denver.

FRANCISCO MEJIAS – CONGAS, BATA, CORO Fransisco Mejias, hailing originally from Santurce, Puerto Rico, enjoys the reputation of being one of the Nation’s top congeros and latin orquesta leaders. His performance credentials include work with the renowned Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Clare Fischer, salsa artist Tito Nieves, Gato Barbieri, Eddie Santiago, the late great Pete El Conde Rodriquez. plus many others. Francisco is the leader of Conjunto Colores, Colorado’s most popular Salsa Band.

VICTOR MESTAS, KEYBOARD, ARRANGER Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Victor Mestas, 2010 Latin Grammy Winner has more than 80 recordings to his professional credits. Victor has accompanied an array of world renowned singers including Julio Iglesias Uruguay/Argentina tour in 2010, Soledad Bravo, Cheo Feliciano, LuisEnrique, and many others. Mestas has performed (as pianist/keyboardist/arranger/producer) for renowned bands in Venezuela, including Guaco, Caracas son 7, and El trabuco venezolano (Venezuelan Salsa All- Stars).

GONZALO TEPPA-DOUBLE BASS Hailing from Lara, Venezuela, Gonzalo Teppas brings amazing performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino. His performance credentials include work with Slide Hampton, Dave and Don Grusin, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Conrad Herwig, and John Von Ohlen, Ron Miles and many others. In addition to his jazz performance background, Mr. Teppas also has extensive international orchestral performance experience. Currently he serves as an adjunct teaching professor at both the University of Wyoming and Metropolitan State University of Denver.

CHRISTINE BARBOSA – VOCALIST, PIANIST, COMPOSER Cristine Barbosa’s unique vocal stylings in English, Spanish and Portuguese have made her one of the most sought-after performers in the Southwest. She has shared the stage with Eddie Palmieri, Gato Barbieri, Luciana Souza, and has been a featured artist at Aspen Jazz, the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, the Santa Fe Jazz Festival, Taste of Colorado, and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Early in her career, Cristine assembled a top-notch Latin-Jazz/Salsa group, touring Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

HOWARD HERNANDEZ – TIMBALERO, LATIN PERCUSSIONIST A 1996 graduate of the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, timbalero Howard Hernandez has toured throughout Latin America with some of the world’s finest salsa groups. Of special note is his work with the highly popular Los Conquistadores de la Salsa and La Orquesta Camaguey. Howard relocated to the U.S. in 2001 and has been the mainstay timbalero for the popular salsa group, Conjunto Colores.

Justin Allison’s repertoire draws extensively from the great American songbook and leans heavily on compositions from well known writers Cole Porter, Ira and George Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Lerner and Lowe, Harry Warren, and many others. Included are tunes from jazz greats Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, Dave Brubeck, and others. From the beautiful and bountiful music of Brazil, the bossa nova and sambas of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dori Caymmi, Joao Bosco, Ivan Lins, and many more are represented. Justin has shared the stage and opened shows for a diversity of talent including Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Tuck and Patti, George Benson, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Rosanna Vitro, Al Green and Tito Puente.

Bob’s played, recorded and toured with many talents including Tom Jones, Nancy Wilson, James Taylor, Diane Schuur, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, and Four Tops. His musical highlights appear naturally with the band, Wake Up Call led by pianist/composer Eric Gunnison. His main instrument is the Alto sax, but doubles on all Saxophones,Flutes and the EWI. Bob is currently on the faculty of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA).

Michael Lenssen is a trumpet player, composer and teacher raised in Boulder, CO. A recent graduate of the University of Miami, Michael was a student of the great Brian Lynch. He has performed with Benny Golson, Art Lande, Emmet Cohen, Kate Reid, Tal Cohen, members of the local group Convergence.  He has studied with John Daversa, Ralph Alessi, Greg Gisbert, Paul Romaine and Dave Rajewski. Michael is working on an upcoming big band collaboration with Greg Gisbert and Lincoln Center and is a member of the band Amoramora. 

Danielle Wertz is a quickly rising jazz vocalist whose talents have been recognized by Washington Women in Jazz Festival (WWJF) Young Artist Contest and also by the Downbeat Student Music Awards with  the Undergraduate Vocal Jazz Soloist Outstanding Performance. Recently, in October of 2015 Danielle was named one of eleven semi-finalists in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition. 

Danielle has performed in many established venues such as Blues Alley, Jammin’ Java, HR-57, The Carlyle Club, Bethesda Blues and Jazz, Twins Jazz, and the St. Petersburg Jazz Philharmonic Hall. She has also had the privilege of working and performing with many renowned musicians including Cyrille Aimée, Gretchen Parlato, Chris Botti, Bruce Hornsby, Martin Bejerano, Claire Daly, Lena Seikaly, Mark Meadows, Billy Williams, Chris Grasso, and many others. Danielle is traveling from Florida and will be joined in part by the Annie Booth Trio.
