A 2 time Nocturne Artist in Residence, Tom Gershwin returns to play a Saturday show in the quartet format.

Tom is a talented and technically gifted modern jazz trumpeter. Mr Gershwin has spent many years working in New York and Colorado with a diverse range of groups, including Juno winner Jayme Stone, Leftover Salmon, The Motet, and The New West Guitar Group. In May 2012, Tom graduated from NYU, where he was an adjunct faculty member and performed with a wonderful faculty including Kenny Werner, Brian Lynch, Chris Potter, Ralph Alessi, Tony Moreno, and trumpet guru Laurie Frink.

THE GABRIEL MERVINE QUARTET

Gabriel is deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical but is also a very active contributor to the modern music scene nationally.  Born in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Gabriel began his professional playing career at the age of thirteen. By the time he graduated high school he was already looking at making a career out of playing the trumpet. He has studied with Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, and Greg Gisbert and quickly gained recognition for as a unique and capable player in any environment. Gabriel has performed with Natalie Cole, Christian McBride, Chie Imaizumi, Terence Blanchard, Russell Malone, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, John McNeil, Convergence, Roberta Gambarini, the Motet, and Houston Person  Gabriel now resides in Denver, Colorado and keeps a rigorous schedule of local and national performances.

In his first Artist in Residency at Nocturne, Gabriel plays in a quartet format in support of his first full length Album entitled 'People' (recently released on the Synergy Label)

Walter is a Bach Trumpet/Artist clinician and is a Professor Emeritus at The Metropolitan State University of Denver.

FRANCISCO MEJIAS – CONGAS, BATA, CORO Fransisco Mejias, hailing originally from Santurce, Puerto Rico, enjoys the reputation of being one of the Nation’s top congeros and latin orquesta leaders. His performance credentials include work with the renowned Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Clare Fischer, salsa artist Tito Nieves, Gato Barbieri, Eddie Santiago, the late great Pete El Conde Rodriquez. plus many others. Francisco is the leader of Conjunto Colores, Colorado’s most popular Salsa Band.

VICTOR MESTAS, KEYBOARD, ARRANGER Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Victor Mestas, 2010 Latin Grammy Winner has more than 80 recordings to his professional credits. Victor has accompanied an array of world renowned singers including Julio Iglesias Uruguay/Argentina tour in 2010, Soledad Bravo, Cheo Feliciano, LuisEnrique, and many others. Mestas has performed (as pianist/keyboardist/arranger/producer) for renowned bands in Venezuela, including Guaco, Caracas son 7, and El trabuco venezolano (Venezuelan Salsa All- Stars).

GONZALO TEPPA-DOUBLE BASS Hailing from Lara, Venezuela, Gonzalo Teppas brings amazing performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino. His performance credentials include work with Slide Hampton, Dave and Don Grusin, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Conrad Herwig, and John Von Ohlen, Ron Miles and many others. In addition to his jazz performance background, Mr. Teppas also has extensive international orchestral performance experience. Currently he serves as an adjunct teaching professor at both the University of Wyoming and Metropolitan State University of Denver.

CHRISTINE BARBOSA – VOCALIST, PIANIST, COMPOSER Cristine Barbosa’s unique vocal stylings in English, Spanish and Portuguese have made her one of the most sought-after performers in the Southwest. She has shared the stage with Eddie Palmieri, Gato Barbieri, Luciana Souza, and has been a featured artist at Aspen Jazz, the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, the Santa Fe Jazz Festival, Taste of Colorado, and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Early in her career, Cristine assembled a top-notch Latin-Jazz/Salsa group, touring Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

HOWARD HERNANDEZ – TIMBALERO, LATIN PERCUSSIONIST A 1996 graduate of the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, timbalero Howard Hernandez has toured throughout Latin America with some of the world’s finest salsa groups. Of special note is his work with the highly popular Los Conquistadores de la Salsa and La Orquesta Camaguey. Howard relocated to the U.S. in 2001 and has been the mainstay timbalero for the popular salsa group, Conjunto Colores.

John Gunther is a composer and multi-instrumentalist playing Saxophones, Clarinet, and Flute. With a restless musical spirit, he explores all forms of jazz from traditional to avant-garde as well as classical music, world music and experimental electronic music. He has performed or recorded with Dave Douglas, Ron Miles, Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, Wallace Roney, Larry Goldings,Tom Harrel, Dewey Redman, Joe Williams, The Woody Herman Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and The Maria Schneider Orchestra. As part of New York city's 'downtown' music scene for many years, he produced five recordings for Creative Improvised Music Projects (CIMP) and is co-founder of the contemporary jazz ensembles, 'Spooky Actions' and 'Convergence.' John is an Associate Professor and director of the Thompson Jazz Studies Program at the University of Colorado Boulder. He received a Ph.D. from New York University. In 2007 he founded the Boulder Laptop Orchestra [BLOrk] to explore the intersection of music, performance, art, and technology. His work with BLOrk has led to further collaboration with the STEM program at CU exploring informal science education through the arts.

Jeremy Pelt has become one of the preeminent trumpeters within the world of jazz. Forging a bond with the Mingus Big Band very early on, as his career progressed, Pelt built upon these relationships and many others which eventually lead to collaborations with some of the genre's greatest masters. These projects include performances and recordings with Cliff Barbaro, Keter Betts, Ravi Coltrane, Frank Foster, Winard Harper, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, John Hicks, Charli Persip, Ralph Peterson, Lonnie Plaxico, Bobby Short, Cedar Walton, Nancy Wilson and The Skatalites, to name a few.

Pelt frequently performs alongside such notable ensembles as the Roy Hargrove Big Band, The Village Vanguard Orchestra and is a member of the Lewis Nash Septet and The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes.

As a leader, Pelt has recorded ten albums and has toured globally with his various ensembles, appearing at many major jazz festivals and concert venues. Pelt's recordings and performances have earned him critical acclaim, both nationally and internationally. He has been profiled in the Wall Street Journal by legendary jazz writer, Nat Hentoff, and was voted Rising Star on the trumpet, five years in a row by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association.

Pelt is currently touring throughout the United States and Europe in support of his latest release, 'Tales, Musings, and Other Reveries' (Highnote Records, 2015).

Pat Casey plays Jaco

Originally from Denver, Pat Casey arrived in New Orleans in February 2008, and quickly assimilated himself into the local music scene. He has become a respected and prominent bassist in New Orleans and plays regularly with luminaries like Chris Thomas King and Bill Summers (where he currently holds the bass seat in the famed Headhunters).

Pat has also pursued his own progressive project, called Pat Casey and the New Sound. The group hosts an introspective yet energetic Sunday night weekly at the Spotted Cat, which has become something of an institution for lovers of jazz and jazz fusion. He’s traveled the world with various groups and has picked up fresh and worldly influences throughout his career, including funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, jazz and gospel. His sound is insightful and captivating, and his creative energy is palpable. 

At Nocturne, Pat with fretless bass in hand is honoring the great Jaco Pastorius in a 3 week run.

A DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, 22-time Grammy winner, and keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living legend status after five decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering.

DR. WALTER BARR- TRUMPET, FLUGELHORN, ARRANGER Bringing many years of performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino, Walter’s performances credentials include work with Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Dizzy Gillespie, Gladys Knight, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr., Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Henry Mancini, Marvin Gaye, Lou Rawls, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Mathis plus many others. Walter is a Bach Trumpet/Artist clinician and is a Professor Emeritus at The Metropolitan State University of Denver.

FRANCISCO MEJIAS – CONGAS, BATA, CORO Fransisco Mejias, hailing originally from Santurce, Puerto Rico, enjoys the reputation of being one of the Nation’s top congeros and latin orquesta leaders. His performance credentials include work with the renowned Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Clare Fischer, salsa artist Tito Nieves, Gato Barbieri, Eddie Santiago, the late great Pete El Conde Rodriquez. plus many others. Francisco is the leader of Conjunto Colores, Colorado’s most popular Salsa Band.

VICTOR MESTAS, KEYBOARD, ARRANGER Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Victor Mestas, 2010 Latin Grammy Winner has more than 80 recordings to his professional credits. Victor has accompanied an array of world renowned singers including Julio Iglesias Uruguay/Argentina tour in 2010, Soledad Bravo, Cheo Feliciano, LuisEnrique, and many others. Mestas has performed (as pianist/keyboardist/arranger/producer) for renowned bands in Venezuela, including Guaco, Caracas son 7, and El trabuco venezolano (Venezuelan Salsa All- Stars).

GONZALO TEPPA-DOUBLE BASS Hailing from Lara, Venezuela, Gonzalo Teppas brings amazing performance experience to Ritmo Jazz Latino. His performance credentials include work with Slide Hampton, Dave and Don Grusin, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Conrad Herwig, and John Von Ohlen, Ron Miles and many others. In addition to his jazz performance background, Mr. Teppas also has extensive international orchestral performance experience. Currently he serves as an adjunct teaching professor at both the University of Wyoming and Metropolitan State University of Denver.

CHRISTINE BARBOSA – VOCALIST, PIANIST, COMPOSER Cristine Barbosa’s unique vocal stylings in English, Spanish and Portuguese have made her one of the most sought-after performers in the Southwest. She has shared the stage with Eddie Palmieri, Gato Barbieri, Luciana Souza, and has been a featured artist at Aspen Jazz, the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, the Santa Fe Jazz Festival, Taste of Colorado, and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Early in her career, Cristine assembled a top-notch Latin-Jazz/Salsa group, touring Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

HOWARD HERNANDEZ – TIMBALERO, LATIN PERCUSSIONIST A 1996 graduate of the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, timbalero Howard Hernandez has toured throughout Latin America with some of the world’s finest salsa groups. Of special note is his work with the highly popular Los Conquistadores de la Salsa and La Orquesta Camaguey. Howard relocated to the U.S. in 2001 and has been the mainstay timbalero for the popular salsa group, Conjunto Colores.

THE GABRIEL MERVINE QUARTET

Gabriel is deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical but is also a very active contributor to the modern music scene nationally.  Born in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Gabriel began his professional playing career at the age of thirteen. By the time he graduated high school he was already looking at making a career out of playing the trumpet. He has studied with Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, and Greg Gisbert and quickly gained recognition for as a unique and capable player in any environment. Gabriel has performed with Natalie Cole, Christian McBride, Chie Imaizumi, Terence Blanchard, Russell Malone, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, John McNeil, Convergence, Roberta Gambarini, the Motet, and Houston Person  Gabriel now resides in Denver, Colorado and keeps a rigorous schedule of local and national performances.

In his first Artist in Residency at Nocturne, Gabriel plays in a quartet format in support of his first album entitled 'People' (recently released on the Synergy Label)

Pat Casey plays Jaco

Originally from Denver, Pat Casey arrived in New Orleans in February 2008, and quickly assimilated himself into the local music scene. He has become a respected and prominent bassist in New Orleans and plays regularly with luminaries like Chris Thomas King and Bill Summers (where he currently holds the bass seat in the famed Headhunters).

Pat has also pursued his own progressive project, called Pat Casey and the New Sound. The group hosts an introspective yet energetic Sunday night weekly at the Spotted Cat, which has become something of an institution for lovers of jazz and jazz fusion. He’s traveled the world with various groups and has picked up fresh and worldly influences throughout his career, including funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, jazz and gospel. His sound is insightful and captivating, and his creative energy is palpable. 

At Nocturne, Pat with fretless bass in hand is honoring the great Jaco Pastorius in a 3 week run.
