In his first Nocturne residency as a leader, drummer/composer Michael D'Angelo and his quintet explore compositions written by jazz's premier rhythmatists. From the swinging, hard-bop anthems of Max Roach and Elvin Jones, to contemporary classics by Jack DeJohnette and Paul Motian, and modern inventions of Ari Hoenig, Brian Blade, and original compositions by D'Angelo, "Drummer Songs" explores the vast musical landscape of jazz's undersung compositional heroes.
Dr. Michael D'Angelo is a Grammy-nominated drummer, composer, and educator originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in jazz studies from the University of Colorado Boulder, a Master of Music degree in jazz studies from Indiana University, and a Bachelor in Music degree in instrumental performance from the University of North Texas. Michael has performed with a wide array of artists in a variety of musical situations including Doc Severinsen, Dave Brubeck, Mary Wilson, Jamey Aebersold, James Carter, Stephen Riley, Ron Blake, Alan Pasqua, Bob Hurst, Ryan Saranich, Brandon Lee, Greg Gisbert, Annie Booth, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony to name a few.
