The MaryLynn Gillaspie - Andreas Schmid Quintet honors Shirley Horn

Jazz icon Shirley Horn is considered one of America's all time great musical artists, she was a true original, and a sensitive vocalist who presented lyrics through an improvisational and lyrical lens unmatched by any other in the genre.

This series dives into the music of Shirley and will feature renowned Denver vocalist MaryLynn Gillaspie, the incomparable pianist Eric Gunnison, trumpeter Tom Gershwin, bassist Bill McCrossen and drummer/co-host of the series, Andreas Schmid.

Tom Gershwin Plays and Sings Chet Baker

Over the course of this special series The Tom Gershwin Quartet endeavors to explore the musical spirit and honor the legacy of the iconic Chet Baker, with a particular focus on Chat's prolific work on the Pacific Jazz label.

Tom’s professional career began in the United States Army Band, where he performed for 3 years across the Pacific Northwest and Japan. He was promoted to sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge. He received his jazz performance degrees from CU Boulder (undergraduate) and NYU (masters).  Tom's projects are all deeply dynamic and balance the framework of finely crafted compositions along with the art of free of expression through improvisation. His sextet has been featured at festivals after fining and honing their sound over several residencies at Nocturne and in 2018, Tom’s released their first album 'Our Season', which was funded in part by the Pathways to Jazz Grant.  Tom has recorded two other jazz albums: “Sweet Pastimes”, an intimate duo project and “Live at Mighty Fine”, an adventurous live quintet recording. Tom has performed and/or recorded with The Temptations, The Revivalists, John Batiste, Father John Misty, Chris Potter, One Republic, DeVotchKa, Opiuo, Leftover Salmon, Juno winner Jayme Stone, and Portugal.The Man at venues including Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Blue Note, and City Park Jazz.

As an artist continually moving forward, Tom seeks to understand a daily process that allows emotion and creativity to thrive. By dedicating himself to this, he strives to inspire students, fellow musicians, and listeners alike through his work.

Briana Harris is a Front Range-based saxophonist who has performed throughout Colorado with groups including The Burroughs, The Cairn Project, David Caffey, Mark Sloniker, Jim White, Steve Kovalcheck, The Colorado Jazz Orchestra, Matt Smiley, Annie Booth, and Ryan Fourt. She holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Alabama and Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado.



Denver based pianist and composer Annie Booth began the piano at a young age and started playing jazz in high school. She went on to study music at the collegiate level, earning a BM in jazz piano performance at the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2011. Annie has become a force in the Denver jazz scene with recent awards as Westword Magazine's winner in the 'Best In Denver' jazz category for both 2015 and 2016 and a recipient of an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award. In addition to her notable work as a recording artist and bandleader, she is an accomplished side-woman, playing often at Nocturne with a number of bands and very recently featured in the Greg Gisbert Quartet tour of Mexico through the 'New York Jazz All-Stars' concert series.


Denver Trumpet Icon Series

Nocturne is excited to host a special series that spotlights a few of the finest trumpet players in the front range. Each Friday night in September, four different trumpet duos will take the stage with their hand selected rhythm sections as they explore both classic and original material.  On September 27th we are pleased to feature Peter Olstad and Greg Gisbert!

The Late Set: Tom Amend and Joey Glassman

Tom Amend is a Denver based pianist, composer, and arranger originally from Riverton, Wyoming. A semifinalist for the 2014 American Jazz Pianist Competition Tom performs throughout the Rocky Mountain Region in various settings as both a leader and sideman. Tom has worked extensively with Soul/Blues artist Taylor Scott appearing at notable blues venues across the country as well as appearing on several of Scott’s records. Tom has a Bachelors degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado and is an alumni of both UNC Lab I and UNC Vanguard Combo.
