The Steve Kovalcheck Trio

All day

Drawing upon a rich musical background that ranges from modern straight-ahead to soul jazz to country, Steve Kovalcheck returns to the Nocturne stage for a three-week run featuring a collection of diverse original works (including selections from his recently released album Ghost Orchid). Steve will be joined by Dru Heller on drums and Patrick McDevitt on bass.

Jazz guitarist/composer Steve Kovalcheck holds a B.M. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a M.M. From the University of Northern Colorado, where he currently teaches jazz improvisation, jazz history, directs jazz ensembles and leads the jazz guitar ensemble. His professional experience includes recording and touring with Columbia recording artist Robinella and the C.C. String Band. Kovalcheck has performed with artists including Victor Krauss, The “New York Voices,” The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, The Dallas Symphony, The Nashville Jazz Orchestra, Jeff Coffin, Tommy Sims, Blue Note Recording Artist Carrie Rodriguez, The Dana Landry Quartet, and many more.

Matt Smiley Trio - Exploring Charlie Haden

In this series Matt and his intrepid trio (Annie Booth - piano and Dru Heller - bass) explore and investigate the works and musical legacy of the eternal Charlie Haden.

An avid explorer of jazz history and recordings, Dr. Matt Smiley has performed both nationally and internationally, including the Montreux, North Sea, and Montreal Jazz Festivals. Matt has a Bachelor's degree in Music Industry with a Jazz Studies minor from James Madison University, and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado, and a PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Matt has led many artist-in-residencies at Nocturne and his most recent album "Crankbait" was released in spring of 2021 on the Nocturne Productions record label.

The Peter Sommer Septet

We are pleased to welcome back to the Nocturne Stage one of the most dynamic and exciting jazz ensembles in Colorado, the Peter Sommer Septet, featuring Darryl Gott - alto sax, Gabe Mervine - trumpet, Paul McKee - trombone, Eric Gunnison - piano, Seth Lewis - bass, Paul Romaine - drums.

Peter Sommer has contributed his energetic tenor playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to avant garde and beyond at venues around the world. Although rooted deeply in the great jazz tradition, Peter continues to search for the mystery in music making and takes great joy in sharing the present moment with the listener.

Peter has released four albums as a bandleader, is a regular member of the Ken Walker Sextet, the Wil Swindler Elevenet, and the New Third Stream Saxophone Quartet. He also performs often as a soloist, in duo with Art Lande, and as a leader of his own quartet and septet. Peter has performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra. He has also performed at multiple IAJE International Conferences and at World Saxophone Congresses in Valencia, Spain, Bangkok, Thailand, St. Andrews, Scotland and Strasbourg, France. Peter is a Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. At CSU, Mr. Sommer directs Jazz Ensemble I and coordinates the Jazz Studies department.

Royal Roost Revival

ROYAL ROOST REVIVAL

An original Nocturne series honoring the prodigious art form of bebop returns for a five show run, Saturday nights in July. Curated and led by Colorado based saxophonist/arranger/composer Wil Swindler, this series is inspired by the iconic Royal Roost jazz club on New York's storied 52nd Street in the late 1940's where bebop was organically brought to life by musicians such as Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tadd Dameron, Fats Navarro, Miles Davis and Max Roach.

Wil Swindler will be joined on the bandstand by a number of special guests including: Eric Gunnison, Jim White, Seth Lewis, Mike Rinko, Greg Gisbert and Paul Romaine.

Saturday Show Times:   Set One: 6:30-7:45pm   |   Set Two: 9:00-10:30pm

Max Light Quartet

Max Light is a New York City based jazz guitarist and composer. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the New England Conservatory and his Master’s from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He won 2nd place in the 2019 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Guitar Competition and his debut trio recording, "Herplusme," was released in early 2020 on Red Piano Records. Max has performed and recorded with Noah Preminger, Donny McCaslin, Jason Palmer, John Ellis, Dan Weiss, Colin Stranahan, Adam Deitch, Kevin Sun, and Bobby Watson among others.
