Tom Amend Organ Quartet

Tom Amend - organ | Alex Heffron - guitar | Nate Miller - horns | BK Kahn - drums

Tom Amend is an organist, pianist, composer, and arranger from Denver, Colorado. Performing and recording throughout the Rocky Mountain region in various settings as both a leader and a sideman he can be heard with with Colorado based Soul/Blues artists: The Burroughs and the Taylor Scott Band. Amend received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies and a Masters of Music in Composition at the University of Northern Colorado. Through his association with UNC, Tom has performed with nationally recognized UNC Lab I, and UNC Vanguard Combo. As a member of these ensembles, he performed withChris Potter, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, Joey DeFrancesco, Groove For Thought, Greg Gisbert, Deborah Brown, Louis Hayes, Dave Liebman, Sheila Jordan and others. As a bandleader, Tom's debut album, "Frontier Justice" features Jeff Hamilton on drums and Steve Kovalcheck on guitar.

The Briana Harris Quintet

Briana Harris returns to the Nocturne stage with a dynamic lineup of some of Colorado's finest and most creative jazz musicians in the quintet format. Listeners will be treated to Bri's signature chamber jazz style, as well as a well curated collection of reworked standards.

Briana Harris is a Front Range-based saxophonist who has performed throughout Colorado with groups including The Burroughs, The Cairn Project, David Caffey, Mark Sloniker, Jim White, Steve Kovalcheck, The Colorado Jazz Orchestra, Matt Smiley, Annie Booth, and Ryan Fourt. She holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Alabama and Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado.

John Gunther Quartet: Monk, Mingus and more

John Gunther returns to Nocturne leading a his quartet in a swinging selection of his own compositions, jazz standards and tunes by Thelonoius Monk and Charles Mingus.

On this date, John is joined by Eric Gunnison on piano, Domi Edson on bass and Harold Summey on drums

John Gunther is a composer and multi-instrumentalist playing Saxophones, Clarinet, and Flute. With a restless musical spirit, he explores all forms of jazz from traditional to avant-garde as well as classical, world and electronic music. He has performed throughout the U.S., South America and Europe, in Carnegie Hall, in the middle of the ocean, and on the back of a truck. He has performed or recorded with jazz greats Christian McBride, Jimmy Heath, Larry Goldings, Tom Harrel, Dewey Redman, The Woody Herman Orchestra, and The Maria Schneider Orchestra as well as guest appearances as a soloist with the Sinfonietta Paris Chamber Orchestra, the Carpe Diem String Quartet and the Banda Nacional de Cartago in Costa Rica.

The Peter Sommer Quintet - New Cool

The Peter Sommer New Cool Quintet presents music inspired by late nights, quiet intensity, lyricism and the simmering burn of American Jazz and Brazilian Bossa Nova. Featuring music by Miles Davis, Lee Konitz, Bill Evans, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as originals by Sommer that allow space for improvisation and dynamic interplay between these fantastic artists. Greg Harris, vibraphone, Annie Booth and Dawn Clement, piano, Michael Rinko, bass, and Kevin Matthews and Dru Heller, drums.

Peter Sommer has contributed his energetic tenor playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to avant garde and beyond at venues across the nation and around the world. Although rooted in the great jazz tradition of his heroes Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, he continues to search for the mystery in music making and takes great joy in sharing the present moment with the listener. Peter Sommer is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. At CSU, Mr. Sommer directs Jazz Ensemble I and coordinates the Jazz Studies area. Peter is a D'Addario endorsed Woodwinds Artist.

Dave Devine: the American Songbook Expanded

Dave and his musical cohorts will be exploring the Great American Songbook with a renewed approach to timeless songs with instantly recognizable melodies. This unique series will including songs from the same era composed outside of Tin Pan Alley but of equal importance and lasting influence.

Presented in the unique instrumentation of electric guitar, piano and drums, Dave says of the series: "this will not at all be floaty, ambient, free sonic environment lacking backbone. Nope, this band will be getting after it!"

Hailed as “Denver’s Guitar Guru” by Westword Magazine, guitarist, composer, and educator Dave Devine is known for his virtuosity as a performer, dramatic versatility as an artist. Devine’s recording projects have ranged from experimental jazz (momen terra, Static Trio) and chamber pop (Greybird, Delby L), to jazz metal (Hate Camels), ambient (Mountain Coast), and art rock (DOORS THAT DON’T).

Devine has also recorded and/or performed with Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band (Body and Shadow, Blue Note), John Grant and the Czars (Sorry I Made You Cry, Bella Union) Art Lande, The Barr Brothers, Chuck Prophet, Marc Broussard, Elliott Sharp, Ron Miles, Matt Wilson, Ben Goldberg, and Neil Halstead among others.
