Jeremy Wendelin Trilogy Project

All day

THE JEREMY WENDELIN TRILOGY PROJECT

Jeremy Wendelin returns to Nocturne for a residence focused on the trio of saxophone, bass, and drums. This instrumentation, pioneered by Sonny Rollins, affords artists great freedom in exploring their material. The sound is simple, but the music is full of complexities; the players have freedom, but also more responsibility to create the right sound for each moment. In the years since Rollins’ early recordings, many artists have taken on this format, including Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, and Melissa Aldana.

The Band: Mark Simon, on bass brings a world class feel and energy, and Todd Reid, on drums, brings swing, propulsion and deep musicality to the ensemble. Todd is one of Denver's finest drummers and has played with dozens of international jazz superstars.  Jeremy Wendelin, the leader and saxophonist, offers a variety of musical colors while playing with strength and intensity. The group starts with the work laid down by Rollins and others, but also tries to bring new colors and stylistic ideas to the trio setting. The goal is to maintain the freedom and “open” sound of this classic instrumentation while incorporating new arranging ideas, exploring different styles, and using different saxophone colors. Selected standards and original material alongside major works like Rollins’ Freedom Suite give this residence a range of moods, from whimsical to serious and focused.

"Be-Bach" by The Gott-Clay Quintet

All day

Although Charlie Parker and Johann Sebastian Bach lived in different eras, and defined different genres of music, they shared many parallel musical ideas. Many of the shapes that Bach used in his compositions were adopted and developed further by Charlie Parker and other great Bebop musicians of the 1940s/50s.  This series will explore these parallels as well as Bebop songs merged and inspired by Bach.

Vlad Girshevich Trio

All day

The Vlad Girshevich returns to the Nocturne stage with Aleks Girshevich on drums and Bill McCrossen on bass to present an evening of hard driving straight ahead jazz  and original works in the classic trio format.

Vlad Girshevich, started his formal music training at The Uspenski School of Music in Uzbekistan and spent 11 blistering years studying classical music there. When he started experimenting with jazz in the 11th grade, his instructors gave him a hard time for being too creative with “free” interpretations. Vlad and his family eventually emigrated to the United States in the mid-90’s. His first gigs were in Boulder with the Nina Storey Band. Herbie Hancock heard Vlad playing at an event in Aspen and subsequently invited him to participate in the Thelonious Monk Institute at Jazz Aspen/Snowmass.

Vlad is now a Denver resident and a part of the scene playing the 5 Points Jazz Festival, The Santa Fe Jazz Festival, Vail Jazz Festival, and Windham Chamber Festival amongstothers . He has performed with Bob Berg, Stanley Jordan, Ernie Watts, Karen Briggs, Jerry Gonzales, Arturo Sandoval, and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez. Vlad and his son (drummer Aleks Girshevich), recently recorded and released a record featuring legendary bassist Eddie Gomez called “Algorithmic Society”.
