Nocturne presents Denver composer and pianist Eric Gunnison for a very special four show series. Eric is an internationally renowned jazz artist with links to numerous iconic artists, venues and cities throughout the country. For this special series Eric is presenting a collection of new original works, alongside a number of his older rearranged/repurposed originals. For this special series, Eric will be joined by Dru Heller on drums and Mark Simon on bass.
Eric Gunnison was raised in Buffalo, NY and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with a BA in music composition in 1979. He lives in Denver where he has been a mainstay in the music scene for two decades. Eric performs the world over and has appeared in concert with Ron Miles, Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Phil Woods, Bobby Shew, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, and Eddie Gomez just to name a few. Some of the more famous work in Eric's career, was his time serving as a pianist and music director to the great Carmen McRae. Since 1991 Gunnison has also been the pianist and a composer/arranger for the Denver super-group Convergence. Gunnison recently retired from his long held position at The University of Denver’s Lamont School Of Music and is now exclusively a performer.

For this special May series, Nocturne welcome's saxophonist Daryl Gott back to the stage as he explores the musical legacy of the great Paul Desmond. Paul will be joined by Alex Heffron (guitar), Seth Lewis (bass), Brian Claxton (drums). Paul Desmond (1924-1977) was an American alto saxophonist with a highly melodic and lyrical style of improvisation and a most unique and warm tone, often described by himself as a “dry martini.” Most widely known for his work with the Pianist Dave Brubeck’s Quartet and his hallmark composition Take Five, Desmond enjoyed a very successful career. During his time outside of the Brubeck Quartet, Desmond often played and recorded in different lineups with guitarists Jim Hall and Ed Bickert. Join us for an exploration of all things Desmond Thursday nights throughout the month of May!
Saxophonist and composer Daryl Gott was born and raised in Denver. Growing up in a musical family Daryl was exposed to music and specifically jazz at a young age. He graduated from Denver School of the arts and continued his formal music education at the City College of New York where he studied with saxophonist Jon Gordon. In 2011, Daryl moved back to Denver and began working as a freelance musician. Since then, he has become a staple of the Denver jazz scene, playing multiple jazz gigs around town every week. He has played with notable musicians such as Greg Gisbert, Paa Kow, Jason Rigby and Jonathan Blake among others. Daryl recently received a Masters degree in jazz saxophone at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The Gabriel Mervine Quintet is a collection of prodigious, like minded artists who have traveled the world round, performing and sharing the jazz art form with thousands of people. For this special series, Gabe and company honor the legendary trumpeter and Blue Note icon Lee Morgan. Gabe will be joined on stage by Jack Dunlevie on piano, Adam Gang on tenor and a cavalcade of talented bassists and drummers including Seth Lewis, Patrick McDevitt, Paul Romaine, Dru Heller and Gabe Mangione.
Bandleader Gabriel Mervine is deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical and is an active contributor to the modern music scene both in Colorado and nationally. Born in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Gabriel began his professional playing career at the age of thirteen. By the time he graduated high school he was already looking at making a career out of playing the trumpet. He has studied with Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, and Greg Gisbert and quickly gained recognition for as a unique and capable player in any environment. Gabriel has performed with Natalie Cole, Christian McBride, Chie Imaizumi, Terence Blanchard, Russell Malone, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, John McNeil, Convergence, Roberta Gambarini, the Motet, and Houston Person Gabriel now resides in Denver, Colorado and keeps a rigorous schedule of local and national performances.

The Steve Langemo Quartet (Stefan Flores: Drums, Adam Ohlson: Piano, Andy Burtschi: Acoustic Bass) performs eclectic modern jazz drawing heavily on compositions by the bandleader as well as off-the-beaten-path tunes by jazz greats. The guitarist's original music ranges from traditional swing with modern harmonies to funkier and more ethereal compositions, all presented with musical interplay by an organic group made up of jazz guitar, acoustic bass, piano, and drums.
Guitarist Steve Langemo is a versatile guitarist with a diverse background in jazz, funk, fusion, and other styles. After earning a master's degree in music Steve has worked extensively as a professional guitarist and educator all across the United States. Now residing in Colorado Springs, he owns/operates his own guitar and jazz focused music school, leads his own bands, works as a sideman with various groups, and serves as the guitarist, writer, and arranger for Denver funk/soul artist Jacob Larson's group. His recent album of original material Up From The Outside features some fantastic Colorado musicians and was released on the Guitar One Records label.

We are delighted to welcome back the ever swinging and deeply musical Jack Dunlevie Trio to the Nocturne stage. For this special one night show, Jack will explore a broad range of straight ahead trio compositions with bandmates Braxton Kahn on drums and Hunter Roberts on bass.
Jack Dunlevie is a Denver-based pianist, mandolinist, vocalist, and composer. He graduated in 2015 from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver winning awards in composition and recital performance. Performing full time around Colorado and touring nationally he can be heard playing Jazz, Classical, Salsa, and Bluegrass with a variety of bands both as a side man and as a leader.
