Matt Smiley Trio - Exploring Charlie Haden

In this series Matt Smiley and his intrepid trio (Ben Markley - piano and Dru Heller - drums) explore and investigate the works and honor the musical legacy of modern jazz icon, Charlie Haden. We are so very delighted to host Matt and share this great music with Denver.


An avid explorer of jazz history and recordings, Dr. Matt Smiley has performed both nationally and internationally, including the Montreux, North Sea, and Montreal Jazz Festivals. Matt has a Bachelor's degree in Music Industry with a Jazz Studies minor from James Madison University, and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado, and a PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Matt has led many artist-in-residencies at Nocturne and his most recent album 'Crankbait' was released in spring of 2021 on the Nocturne Productions record label.



Wednesday Show Times:


Set One: 6:30 - 7:45pm

Allison Young Quartet plays Gerry Mulligan

Saxophonist Allison Young makes her Nocturne debut paying tribute to the great baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan with her quartet (Kate Williams - trumpet, Domi Edson - bass, and Bobby Wiens - drums). The Allison Young Quartet captures the essence of the west coast/cool jazz chordless quartet popularized by Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, and will be playing a lively mix of Mulligan hits and lesser known compositions.


Allison Young is a Colorado based woodwind artist who performs as a bandleader and side-person for groups such as the Drew Zaremba Jazz Fellowship, the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and the Annie Booth Big Band. Most recently, she toured North America as the baritone saxophonist for the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. She has performed alongside artists such as Wayne Bergeron, Sheila Jordan, Greg Gisbert, Steve Kovalcheck and Jim White, and recently graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Music Business.

Taylor Clay Quartet plays Coltrane

Taylor Clay and his quartet return to the Nocturne stage Friday nights in July to pay homage to the iconic John Coltrane will be brought to life by an excellent collection of forward thinking Denver jazz artists including: Jack Dunlevie on piano, Mark Simon on bass and Braxton Kahn on drums.


Taylor Clay was born in Brooklyn, NY and began his musical journeys at the age of 13 and went on to study at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY. After completing his degree in Music Performance in 2012, he moved to Colorado to attend the University of Northern Colorado as a graduate student and teaching assistant. Taylor currently lives in Denver, Colorado works as a busy freelance musician.

Jenna McLean Quintet: A Wink and a Smile

Inspired by her love for comedy, vocalist Jenna McLean and her band have thoughtfully curated a set of music dedicated to the fun, playful and humorous attitude so often found in the jazz tradition. The band will perform some of Jenna’s original music and venture into the clever works of Bob Dorough, Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter, Ida Cox, Lambert Hendricks and Ross, and more. Over the course of July, Jenna will be joined by a collection of special guests including Briana Harris, Wil Swindler, Tom Amend, Annie Booth, Michael Rinko, Alejandro Castaño and Bobby Wiens.



Jenna McLean is an accomplished jazz vocalist, songwriter and educator who finds her artistic drive in bringing new twists to timeless standards of the Great American Songbook as well as pop, funk and soul tunes. Jenna has a Doctor of Arts degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and has had the pleasure of performing alongside renowned musicians such as Bobby McFerrin, Aubrey Logan and the New York Voices, and also performs regularly with Colorado-scene musicians such as Steve Kovalcheck, Ben Markley, Eric Gunnison, Tom Amend, Dawn Clement, Annie Booth and others.

Alejandro Castaño Organ Trio

We invite you to join us for two special sets of jazz, soul, funk and boogaloos with Alejandro Castaño Organ TrioThis stellar lineup features Tom Amend on B3 organ and Patrick McDevitt on bass.


Alejandro Castaño is an active drummer and educator in the United States and abroad. Castaño’s performance and recording credits include: Ron Miles, Eric Gunnison, Greg Gisbert, Peter Sommer, Steve Turre, Benny Bannack III, The Annie Booth Trio, Gabriel Mervine and many others. Alejandro received his Bachelors in Jazz Studies from Metropolitan University of Denver in 2015 and his Masters in Music from the University of Colorado. In addition to being a bust oerformer, Alejandro is an avid educator. In addition to being on the faculty at Denver School of the Arts, he also teaches with the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts.
