The Harry Drabkin Quartet

We are delighted to welcome saxophonist Harry Drabkin and his quartet back to the Nocturne stage for two special nights in November. Harry will be joined by a world class rhthym section of: Eric Gunnison on piano, Todd Reid on drums and Mark Simon on Bass.

Harry Drabkin is a Berklee College of Music graduate as well as a faculty alumni where he performed in the Recording Band, Faculty Jazz Ensemble and more. His influences come from Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball and Charlie Mariano. Harry recently retired as Chief of Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and returned to Denver where he is active in our local jazz scene.

The Dawn Clement Quartet: Farewell to Summer

Nocturne is delighted to host Dawn Clement in an quartet format with Patrick McDevitt (bass), Sam Williams (sax), and Dru Heller (drums) for two nights in November.  The music for these two nights will be a thoughtful mix of original works and arrangements that combine for a meditation on the changing of seasons. The aural landscape of this quartet is fluid, dreamlike, and deeply engaging.

Dawn Clement is a pianist/vocalist/composer based in Denver, Colorado who has established herself as a top tier, international artist.  She has released 6 albums as a leader, most recently, an album called Islands (Fall ’21), a collection of original songs in collaboration with producer Jon Solo. Dawn has performed with many distinguished artists, including: Jane Ira Bloom, säje, Rene Marie, Ingrid Jensen, John Clayton, Sheila Jordan, Tia Fuller, Ron Miles, Matt Wilson, Allison Miller, Anat Cohen, Donny McCaslin, Terrell Stafford, Ernie Watts, Monique Brooks Roberts, Shane Endsley, Quincy Davis, and others.

Dawn is a founding member of Esthesis Quartet (’20) who released their self-titled debut album in May ’22 with ha second release (Time Zones) coming in March ’23. In Fall ’21, Dawn was the recipient of the CMA performance plus grant to compose for Esthesis Quartet and work with artist educator Bill Frisell.  Dawn holds a Bachelor’s of Music from Cornish College of the Arts, a Master’s of Music Composition from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz and American Improvised Music at MSU Denver.

Louisa Amend / Eric Gunnison Quartet - Honoring Carmen McRae

Nocturne is honored to present this unique series that honors the American jazz singer, Carmen McRae Regarded the rare musical equal to her friends Ella and Billie, Carmen had a prolific career in the jazz idiom that spanned from 1940's into the late 1980's. Her live performances, filled with emotional richness and a heavy swinging style are simply legendary.

This series will offer a special musical insight, as Eric Gunnison was the pianist on Carmen McRae's highly regarded (and Grammy nominated) Carmen Sings MonkFrom 1986 to 1991 Gunnison also toured as the pianist and arranger for McRae. Eric will be joined by Denver singer Louisa Amend who will explore many of Carmen's classics, as well as a few treasures pulled from one of Carmen's last known existing physical books of music that Eric has managed to preserve much of.

Louisa Amend is a vocalist and educator based out of Denver, Colorado. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 2016 with a Bachelors of Music Education and was a member of a number of the premier ensembles and opera productions produced by the university. After teaching in public schools for a few years Louisa transitioned into working as a freelance musician and founding her own voice studio.

Eric Gunnison was raised in Buffalo, NY and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with a BA in music composition in 1979. He lives in Denver where he has been a mainstay in the music scene for 2 decades. Eric performs the world over and has appeared in concert with Ron Miles, Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Phil Woods, Bobby Shew, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, and Eddie Gomez just to name a few. Since 1991 Gunnison has also been the pianist and a composer/arranger for the Denver super-group Convergence. After along fruitful tenure, Gunnison recently retired from his position at The University of Denver’s Lamont School Of Music and is exclusively a performer.

Wil Swindler and Friends Quintet

Celebrating community and the beauty of the saxophone, the Wil Swindler Quartet welcomes guest artist saxophonists Saturdays in October and November.  In the tradition of the 2-saxophone quintets (Lee Konitz/Warne Marsh, Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt, Mark Turner/Joshua Reman), this residency features outstanding repertory music as well as originals and tunes selected by each guest.  Saxophone guest artists over the course of two months will include Remy Le Boeuf, Briana Harris, Adam Gang, and Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic.
Rhythm section: Steven Denny - piano, Matt Smiley - bass, Alejandro Castaño - drums

Wil Swindler is a saxophonist, composer, and winner of the 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship, and educator based in the Denver Front Range area. Mr. Swindler holds a B.M. from the University of North Texas and has received commissions from West Point's Jazz Knights, The USAF Falconaires, Denver University, Colorado State University. As a performer, he has played with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Cuong Vu, John Fedchock, Steve Wilson, Bill Warfield, Greg Gisbert, and many others. Wil Swindler is on the music faculty at Colorado State University as Associate Director of Jazz Studies.

The Andrew Vogt Quartet: "Optimistic Infinity House"

Andrew Vogt returns to the Nocturne stage for the last three Sundays in November to present a collection of original works featured on his new record "Optimistic Infinity House".  A Nocturne favorite, Andrew can been described as a 'musical chameleon' - a single performance by Andrew can include influences of swing, bebop, cool jazz, fusion, klezmer, and tango! 

Personnel: Andrew Vogt - Saxophones, Clarinet, Drew Morell - Bass, Andreas Schmid - Drums, Adam Bodine - Piano. This series will be high energy, dynamic and adventurous. 

Andrew Vogt is freelance sax/clarinet player based in Colorado. He is featured on many artists’ releases including recordings by Mark Sloniker, Paul Mullikin, Adam Bodine and more. Andrew has four CD’s out under his own name entitled “Action Plan”, “Cats Afoot”, “Twirling Zucchini Trio” and his 2019 release 'Distracted by Donuts.' Andrew Vogt earned a degree in Music Education from the University of Nebraska, while majoring in saxophone and minoring in clarinet. In addition to performing, he is proud to be the band director at St. Joseph Catholic School in Fort Collins, and St. John the Evangelist Catholic School and Immanuel Lutheran School in Loveland. He also maintains a private studio, teaching woodwind students of all levels of skill and experience.
