Dave Corbus - Electric Mingus

All day

Nocturne welcomes Denver jazz guitarist Dave Corbus and his quartet (Eric Gunnison on piano, Mark Simon on bass, and Harold Summey on drums) to the stage to celebrate the musical legacy of the monumental composer, band leader, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. The core of the sets will focus on Mingus' blues based compositions set for electric guitar quartet.

Dave Corbus, instructor of jazz guitar at CU Boulder, spent over a decade playing in New York City as part of the "downtown" and mainstream jazz scenes. Mr. Corbus and his trio played weekly at the New York jazz club Augies (now Smoke) for a three-year stint. Mr. Corbus has played with a variety of well-known jazz musicians such as Red Holloway, Lonnie Smith, Plas Johnson, Lewis Nash, Javon Jackson, Bobby Watson and Joey DeFrancesco, and his trio has performed at Denver’s finest jazz clubs and at Colorado’s biggest music festivals.

Sonya Walker Trio - Honoring Ahmad Jamal

All day
Sonya Walker - piano, Michael Rinko - bass, Dru Heller - drums

After his passing in April of this year, Ahmad Jamal left behind a musical legacy that influenced many key players in the art form and changed our American Classical music itself. Born in 1930, he came up in an era of jazz in which virtuosity and speed were of great importance. To that world of density he brought a magnificent contrast; disciplined space, along with eclectic influences, incredible patience, and an orchestral style of playing that altered the concept of the piano trio. Now, 65 years after the release of But Not For Me at the Pershing in Chicago, this trio hopes to honor that spirit by carrying it forward with this performance in the dense and virtuosity-demanding year 2023.

Sonya Walker is a Colorado-born multi-instrumentalist who considers piano the sun in her musical solar system. She can be found playing several types of music in and around the Denver area. She has shared the stage with wonderful and spectacular people such as Greg Gisbert, Art Lande, Randy Brecker, and Roy Hargrove. This performance will be her Nocturne debut as a bandleader; you're invited, hope you can come!

Jeremy Wendelin Quintet: Our Man in Paris

All day

Jeremy Wendelin and his talented quintet dig deeply into the art form of hard bop as they study the compositions and stylings of Dexter Gordon and Bud Powell, the famous American jazz expatriates living in Paris in the 1950's and 1960's. In addition to compositions by Powell and Gordon, a special focus will be paid to the contributions of prominent sidemen from this time and place, people like Kenny Clarke, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson, Kenny Drew, and Pierre Michelot.  These nights will be filled with swinging, driving hard bop, with a few select ballads (always a staple for Dexter), to provide cool moments of counterpoint.

Walter Gorra is a Colorado-raised pianist, composer, educator and structural engineer. Studying at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Walter earned degrees in jazz piano performance and structural engineering and had the good fortune to study and work with Art Lande, Jeff Jenkins, Victor Mestas and many other notable Colorado musicians. During his time in New York, Walter also performed and/or wrote and arranged music for Paquito D’Rivera, Ingrid Jensen, and Pete McGuinness and others.
