Nocturne presents Denver composer and pianist Eric Gunnison for a very special four show series. Eric is an internationally renowned jazz artist with links to numerous iconic artists, venues and cities throughout the country. For this special series Eric is presenting a collection of new original works, alongside a number of his older rearranged/repurposed originals. For this special series, Eric will be joined by Dru Heller on drums and Mark Simon on bass.
Eric Gunnisonwas raised in Buffalo, NY and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with a BA in music composition in 1979. He lives in Denver where he has been a mainstay in the music scene for two decades. Eric performs the world over and has appeared in concert with Ron Miles, Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Phil Woods, Bobby Shew, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, and Eddie Gomez just to name a few. Some of the more famous work in Eric's career, was his time serving as a pianist and music director to the great Carmen McRae. Since 1991 Gunnison has also been the pianist and a composer/arranger for the Denver super-group Convergence. Gunnison recently retired from his long held position at The University of Denver’s Lamont School Of Music and is now exclusively a performer.

Thursday nights in September, we honor jazz icon Shirley Horn. One of America's all time great musical artists, Horn was a true original. She was a storyteller with a sensitive edge who presented lyrics through an improvisational and lyrical lens unmatched by any other. This special series dives into her musical legacy and will feature renowned Denver vocalist MaryLynn Gillaspie, pianist Eric Gunnison, trumpeter Gabriel Mervine, bassist Gonzalo Teppa and drummer/co-host of the series, Andreas Schmid.

Denver jazz staple Eric Gunnison was raised in a musical family in Buffalo, NY and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with a BA in music composition in 1979. He lives in Denver where he has been a mainstay in the music scene for 19 years. Eric has toured and recorded with the iconic jazz vocalist Carmen McRae, and trumpeter Ron Miles. In addition, he has performed in concert with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Phil Woods, Bobby Shew, John McNeil and Eddie Gomez.
Gunnison has also been the pianist and a composer/arranger for the cooperative band Convergence one of Denver’s leading jazz ensembles, since 1991. Active for more than 30 years as a sideman and studio musician Gunnison is active faculty at the University of Denver’s Lamont School Of Music and the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts.
This residence will feature Eric's catalogue of original trio compositions.

Built upon the trust, camaraderie and love that can form between longtime bandmates, this trio produces a sound that is edgy, intriguing, rhythmically complex and always compelling. Over the course of nearly two decades, these three Denver jazz icons have played countless shows together in a myriad of different scenarios. Through these experiences they have developed a deep connection and birthed a unique musical language between them that they are excited to share once again with the Nocturne audience. The Mayhem Trio will feature a range of works from modern standards to group originals as well as works from the iconic Chick Corea.
